It can be useful to represent neural systems by sets of differential equations that can be analyzed using dynamical systems theory. For example, the Hodgkin-Huxley model consists of four ordinary differential equations that describe the generation of action potentials . While most systems arising in computational neuroscience are not analytically solvable, dynamical systems theory provides a way to study qualitative properties such as limit cycles and bifurcations.
